Baekmiri Village – The village of happy
people by the seas!!Baekmiri Village is a village by the seas that has varieties of seafood. This village was named Baekmi or Baekmi-ri
after hundreds of different taste presented by its seafood. It is a Ri at Seosim-myeon of Hwaseong in
Gyeonggi-do. Although it is a village by
the seas, it also has a high mountainous valley nearby.
The natural towns in the village include Guriseom,
Baelmi, and Dangneomeo. Guriseom is
called Gulseom because natural oysters are caught in a large quantity or
Guriseom because Chinese people came here to gather copper.
The
village is named Baekmi also because its topography resembles a snake that is
hiding its tail. Dangneomeo is named so
because Guriseom is located over the hills to its southeast.
Traditions and Characteristics1. There is a natural spring beneath the village
cemetery. The spring water turned red
when the tombs in the cemetery or those on the nearby mountain were damaged. (There used to be a military base on the
mountain and the soldiers used to drink this spring water called ¡°Jangsumul.¡± It no longer exists today.)
2. The cemetery was called ¡°Aechongmyo¡± and used
to bury many babies in tombs that were not made properly.
3. Baekmiri Village
has named many places after natural objects.
4. There is an island called Gamtuseom that rises
sharp in the middle of the sea. In the
past, sailors prayed for safety before they went out to the ocean to fish. However, it is not easy to find the places
where they used to pray nowadays.
5. The
village holds a festival of clam and seaweed gathering once a year.
