Village Introduction
Indicated as 'Dangji' in the Jeju Islands Map of Chosun King Sukjong, it
is Jeju Island's typical mid-slope village that displays the strong native traits
of Jeju people who reclaimed unused lands in spite of geographical adversities.
Jeoji Pot-Planting Art Center is a worldly renowned attraction and many
tourists praise the Art Center with rare-looking beautiful pot-planting as a
small heaven.
General
RecordsJeoji-ri is a typical mountainous village that is closest to Halla
Mountains being located the highest among the villages of Hangyeong-myeon. It
borders Andeok-myron of Namjeju and is the home of the east's greatest pot-planting
art center. It is one of most historical villages of Hangyeong-myeon and
has abundant rainfall and snowfall as it is a mountainous village. Orchards
and dry-field cultivation are widely distributed throughout this village. Jeoji-ri
is a mid-slope village forming a basin with 'Jeojiak' that is called new volcano
(Saeoreum) in the center as the emblem of the village. Although it is
a typical mid-slope village, it is rapidly growing as district way and national
highway have been constructed nearby. It is also the home of the east's
greatest pot-planting art center.
Brief History
The village was settled by Lee Family of Jinju about 400 years ago. As it is
Indicated as 'Dangji' in the Jeju Islands Map of Chosun King Sukjong, it is
assumed to have been founded before his time. Centered by Dangmol or Dangmoru,
it was called Yongdal-ri, Gyereung-ri, Myeonghak-ri and Gyeji-ri and renamed
Jeoji-ri along the way (year not known). The village was composed of Sudong,
Keunuyeong, Utgeori, Janghwagut and Majongi, but later moved to around Mango-dong.
The specific history is not found as many references were burned during
4?3 Incident. They depended on Bongcheong Springs as they could
not develop many water supplies and they could not benefit from the civilization.
However, they developed farming by reclaimed unused lands in spite of
geographical adversities. Although it is a typical mid-slope village,
it is rapidly growing as district way and national highway have been constructed
nearby
