It is Korea's first natural hot springs that have been springing for 30,000 years ago. The name Hot Springs was recorded in the texts of 1018 B.C.E (9th year of the reign of Chosun King Hyeongjong) and are historically introduced in 30 books including History of Chosun, Korean Atlas, Map Book, Cheonggu Map and Great East Map.

The fact that it was loved by Maeng-Dam An, the son-in-law of Great King Sejong; Nam Gwon, a prime minister of Chosun King Sejo; Sang-Ha Gwon, a famous Confucian scholar of Chosun King Sukjong; and many other people who enjoy bathing in hot springs is well described in a historical note. It was particularly gathered by various patients as there was no hospital.

It was developed into modern hot springs as a public tub was made in 1885 and modern excavation of the hot springs using modern equipments was done in 1929.

According to a legend, a dragon was just spending a winter here, but became too strong to be raised into the heaven. Also, a leprosy patient was spending a winter at the steamy springs of Suanbo. When he washed himself with the hot spring water springing from the center of a farm, his disease was thoroughly healed.
