Mindung Village
Busan/Ulsan/GyeongNam List >>
Mindung maul, one of the model regions selected for the rural Information Promotion Project, is located at the southern extremity of the Korean peninsula near the east sea.
That is, it sits at the extreme tip of the Asian continent that stretches from the Bosphorus Straights in Turkey, passing through Mongolia and China, all the way to the east sea of the Korean peninsula. Mindung maul is the end point of the Asian continent and also the start point of the Pacific.
Mindung maul is located in the southern part of the Korean peninsula and is close to the east sea, so it is affected by both an oceanic climate and a continental climate. For this reason, temperatures are 3~4oC higher than neighboring regions.
The annual average temperature is 13~14oC (1~4oC in January, the coldest month, and 28oC in August, the hottest month). Annual rainfall is 900~1,500mm.
Due to monsoons, the village has completely different seasons--a rainy season in the summer and a dry season in the winter.

It is located between the metropolises of Busan and Ulsan, and belongs to Seosaeng-myon, Ulju-gun, Ulsan city. It consists of two ri's with a total of five villages, Ongok-1-gu, Ongok-2-gu, Hwasan, Yeonsan and Yongyeon. There are 332 households with 978 residents.
Mindung has less agricultural land as compared to other regions and is affected by an oceanic climate due to its proximity to the sea. It cannot compete by raising common crops.
This is the reason why village residents farm special crops from which farmers can earn a higher income.
The village has ideal climate conditions for pear farming, that is, affluent rainfall, year round temperate weather and sufficient sunshine. For that reason over 80% of the residents farm Seosaeng pears, a regional specialty that boast a superior pulpy texture.
Climatic conditions in Mindung are also ideal for cultivating Seosaeng orchids which require high-intensity sunlight and tolerate only slight fluctuations of temperature. The Seosaeng orchids produced in Mindung have clear colors and are of extraordinary quality, quite suitable for export to China and the U.S.

Tourist destinations in the village include Ganjeolgot, where the sun rose earliest on the northeast Asian continent on the first day of the new millennium. There is also Seosaengpo Waeseong (fortress), built by Japanese troops during the Imjinwaeran (Korea-Japan war during the Chosun Dynasty) and the Jinha swimming beach, which boasts clean water, fine sand and green forests. Thanks to these tourist attractions and historic sites, the village greets 2.5 million tourists annually.
People are calling the 21st century the "Age of the Pacific."
