The Traditional Home of Jung Hoi Kim (1903-1970) was built
in the 8th year of the reign of King Sukjong (1682) as a typical
noble home of the Joseon Dynasty. This was the typical structure
for a home of the ruling class in the Joseon Dynasty and consisted
of the main building, a detached building, and a servants¡¯ building.
The two large storage depots by the gate building, the shrine,
and the main building were built on natural stone. The main
building has eight-edged roofing with a ridge, single-layered eaves,
and is overlooking the front yard. These characteristics make
this building very unique. There used to be several additional
buildings by the main building, but most of them were lost during
the Korean War. Sir Jung Hoi Kim was the descendant of Sa
Hyung Kim, who contributed to the foundation of the Joseon Dynasty,
and was a great Confucian scholar. He taught Philosophy at
Gyeonghakwon (Myeongryun School), the previous form of today¡¯s
Sungkyunkwan University.
Jung Hoi Kim enjoyed drawing apricot trees, orchids, and chrysanthemums,
but his painting of bamboo trees is the most popular. He is
still widely known as a scholar, calligrapher, and painter. Sir
Kim was from a high-class family, but he volunteered to help many
underprivileged commoners. Many people in the local town still
cherish his modesty and virtuous deeds.
