Mt.Gamak

Location

? Hwangdun-ri Sinrim-myeon Wonju, Gangwon

Information

Mt.Gamak (885m) is located where Bongyang-eup of Jecheon in Chungbuk and Sinrim-myeon of Wonju in Gangwon meet.  It is generally called Mt.Gamak, but it is marked as Gamak Peak on the map by the National Geography Center.

Mt.Gamak is a popular hiking course for families throughout the year.  Unfortunately, Jungang Highway passes through Biggijae and Myeongam-ri and made the popular hiking course between Myeongam-ri and Byeokryeonsa Temple less attractive.  However, the new route allows busy mountain hikers adjust the hiking time as they wish.  Beneath Mt.Gamak is a sacred place of folk religion, Catholicism, and Buddhism.  Sinrim-myeon to the west represents Sacred Forest by its name.

Baeron Sacred Land is located to the south.  This place is where Catholic believers hid themselves away from the persecution of Daewongun.

Also, there is Baekryeonsa Temple, an old temple from the Shilla Empire, beneath Mt.Gamak.  It is said that Baekryeonsa Temple was established by Priest Uisang and it is named Baekryeonsa because a white lotus bloomed in its pond when the temple was established.  It is a recommended stop when you come to Mt.Gamak for hiking.  In summer, visit Maebong Mountain Cabin, Mt. Chiak Tourism Farm, and Seomani River in Songgye-ri after hiking up and down the mountain.

Seomani River

Location

? Songgye-ri Sinrim-myeon Wonju, Gangwon

Introduction

Seomani River, the upstream of Jucheon River, is made of many tributaries that flow from the west of Mt.Chiak.  Seomani River is relatively clear and has many camping grounds nearby.  Thus, many tourists are coming here to enjoy their summer vacation.  Hwangdun Village offers lodging, natural farm produce, and delicious foods.  Seomani River has many tributaries and Eomdun Valley is the most beautiful of all.  The small falls, deep pone, and transparent waters create beautiful sceneries.  Nearby, Yoseonjeong Pavilion stands up on the cliff by where Seomani River meets Beopheungcheon Stream to flow into Jucheon River.  Go up through the old pine forest, and clear waters and cool breezes will wipe away your sweat on the high cliff.  The seated relief of Buddha on the rock and a small stone pagoda are eye-catching.  Follow the waters to the upstream, and a cliff appears across the river and Janggunbaui (General Rock) stands on it.  It seems as if a general, wearing an armor and long helmet, is holding a small hundreds-of-years-old pine tree that grows in between rocks as his long sword.  The rock has been weathered and rounded with time, but it still looks very powerful.  Across Songgyegyo Bridge is Mt.Hoibong.  It is called Hoibong because the peak revolves or because the falcons living on top of the mountain will return as phoenixes.  Falcons used to threaten the village about ten years ago, but they no longer exist.  They might have left to become phoenixes.  The deep pond of clear waters is filled with various kinds of fish that are only found in top-quality waters and attracts fishers from across Korea.  On the bottom of Seomani River are rocks, pebbles, and sand.  There is no mud.  The fish living in the clear water with no mud is never fishy and makes great taste in soups.  Seomani River meanders by the deep mountain village of Gangwon-do.  This is why its name says inside island.  This place delivers you a silent and cozy night.

Directions
