▶Description
Mt. Odae that stretches through
Yeongok-myeonn of Gangneung, Jinbu-myeon of Pyeongchang-gun, and
Nae-myeon of Hongcheon-gun was designated as a national park in
February 1975. It is also a thesaurus of culture and history
with three national treasures, three treasures, one historical relic,
four local cultural assets, one cultural item, and 10 temples. Samgukyusa
writes Mt. Odae as the best of the best mountains in Korea and that
Buddhism will be very prosperous here. In fact, there are
many well-known temples and cells in Mt. Odae. Mt. Odae’s
generous lotus-shaped terrain reminds us of Buddha’s generosity.
Cultural Asset and Relic: Woljeongsa Temple (Old temple
of Priest Jajang from the Shilla Empire. Has Octagonal 9-story
Pagoda (National Treasure No. 48) and Seated Stone Statue of Bodhisattva
(Treasure No. 139), Sangwonsa Temple (Sangwonsa Bronze Bell, National
Treasure No. 37, is located by the entrance. The bell from
the time of King Seongdeok of Shilla Empire is known for the artistic
value of its delicate image of a fairy on the surface. Sangwonsa
Temple also has Seated Wooden Statue of Young Buddha, National Treasure
No. 221), Jeokmyeolbogung (Located by Mt. Odae’s highest peak,
it is the most well-known of five Jeokmyeolbogung in Korea. As
Jeokmyeolbogung enshrines Buddha’s sarira, it is visited by many
worshippers throughout the year.)
