Gagok Natural Forest
It was opened in 1994 in a 99,690,000§³ forest and can allow
up to 1,000 visitors per day. It is managed by Samcheok National
Forest Management Office.
It is located by the valley formed by Nakdong Mountain Vein and
a small river to the north of Seokgaejae ridgeline and this valley
flows to Gagokcheon. It was originally a zinc mine, but was
developed into a national forest as the price of zinc saw a great
drop. It still has various remains of a mine, such as rails
and pit mouths, and helps us learn much about old mines.
Magnificent bizarre-looking rocks surround the valley as a screen
and several waterfalls, including Gagok Waterfalls and Yeonhwa Waterfalls,
are located here and there. The forest includes various species
of broad-leaved trees, such as Kalopanax pictus, Japanese elm, and
The forest also has various specialized facilities such as Forest
House, Forest Culture and Recreation Center, a camping site and
a fitness center, a tennis court, a water fountain, a swimming pool,
a recreation plaza, a folk playground, a kid¡¯s playground, a trout
habitat, Forest Classroom, a pavilion, and a volleyball court. It
is near Deokpung Valley and Hosan Beach to enable picnics to both
mountains and seas. Other attractions include Deokgu Hot Springs,
Mt. Taebaek Provincial Park, Samcheok Jukseoru, Mureung Valley,
and Miin Waterfalls.
Currently, it is temporarily closed due to flooding.
Gagokcheon that stretches from Gagok-myeon and Wondeok-eup of
Samcheok-gun is where Borigol, Yongsogol, and Donghwal Valley of
Mt. Eungbong gather to flow into the East Sea.
Gagokcheon is so clear that it is a habitat of Chinese mitten
crab and provides good camping sites. Trout and Coreoperca
herzi are also frequently found.
It has great natural landscapes and several waterfalls and is
quiet and untouched, being located far from the village. The
screen of surrounding mountains makes it great for mountain climbing
and family picnics. You may use Procinvial Highway No. 416
to Punggok-1-ri to get here. It is about 8km from the entrance
to the valley.
