IMt. Mudeung is a guardian mountain soaring high over the eastern edge of Kwangju City and Damyang/Hwasun in Jeonnam Province. With its gently rounding features the mountain always seems to suggest stability and noblesse.
As the trails are generally without rocks, anybody can easily hike up the mountain. There are many mineral springs in the mountain so as to have a constant stream of neighbors.
The great spectacle of Mt. Mudeung lies within the beauty of the rock formations which jut out from all over the top of the mountain. The highest peak in Mt. Mudeung is 1,187m above sea level. From any vista on Cheonwangbong can be seen the magnificent panorama of the precipitous rocks including Seoseokdae, Ipseokdae and Kyubong. Saeinbong rising over the west ridge of Jangbuljae has become a well-known climber's training course with its walls of precipices that looks like the Royal seal where the name originated. Jikong Tunnel to the south of Cheonwangbong, and Deoksan Tunnel to the east of Jeungshimsa (Temple) also present a rare sight in other mountains.
Various kinds of plants are distributed throughout Mt. Mudeung, which delight the eyes of climbers. Azaleas in spring, day lilies in summer and maple trees and saw grass along the ridge in autumn make the mountain all the more attractive. Clear streams and waterfalls in summer and the snowy landscape in winter are scenes which shouldn't be missed. Mt. Mudeung is not only a mountain of beauty but also the place with the sprit of ancestors.
Mt. Mudeung has many Buddhist temples including Jeungshimsa, Weonhyosa, Yaksaam and Kyubongam, which hold precious cultural assets and legends. In the northern foot of the mountain, there are pavilions and summerhouses including Hwanbyeokdang, Shikyoungjeon and Sosoeweon, which were the cradle of poetry and scholarly spirits. This was the area where Baekryeon Huh, whose pen name was Euijae, was the master artist of the Southern school of Chinese painting and was actively engaged in creative activities and the cultivation of pupils.
On May 22, 1972, Mt. Mudeung was designated as a provincial park and since then hiking to the peaks has been restricted. There are recreational and convenience facilities at the foot of the mountain. Watermelons that were once exclusively delivered to the King as tribute are the pride of Mt. Mudeung.
Starting from Jeungshimsa, it takes only 2-3 hours to climb up to the top of the mountain. Along the northeastern scenic road, it takes 30 minutes to get to the Weonhyo Valley of the mountainside by car. Buses are also available. It takes one and a half hours to go up to the summit from there.
