Duryun Smurf village

With abundant sun light and oceanic climate, the colors are brightened and the life-span of cut flowers is lengthened. They are nutri-cultured with high-purity groundwater for premium quality. By using life-span lengthener, the beautifully arranged cut flowers can be appreciated for a longer period of time. The optimum temperature is around 20°C with daytime temperature of 24~27°C and nighttime temperature of 16~18°C. The growth stops if the temperature drops to 5°C and the leaves fall to rest the trees below 0°C. The flowers discolor and grow ill in over 30°C. Sandy or loamy soils with abundant organic materials is good with the acidity of pH 5.5~6.5.

Cultivation and Usage of Roses
In case of cut-cultivation, the permanent planting should be done around Feb~Apr and cultting should be done after 4~5 months of growth from the permanent planting. It harvested too early, the roots are weakened to shorten the life span of the trees. There are cut-pruning and arch-pruning methods when forming the trees. Arch-pruning is great for high-quality production, while cut-pruning provides greater quantity. If solid chemicals are directly applied, they may generate harmful gases, so use liquid fertilizers. Liquid fertilizers of each kind should be applied in the amount of 150~200ppm centered by nitrogen and kali substances every time the farms are irrigated. Phosphorus should be applied in full amount. Roses are fertilized by carbonic acid gases, so applying carbonic acid gases of 1,000~2,000ppm increases the production and quality of the winter greenhouse roses by 15~20%.

Carnations are one of Korea’s 10 cut-flowers and one of Holland’s 7 cut-flowers. They are most vibrantly raised in 15∼21℃. The lowest temperature of a certain range quickens the blooming of the flowers. The blooming of carnations is controlled by timely permanent-planting and stem-pruning. They are greatly influenced by temperatures, lights, length of daytime, environmental conditions, growth control materials and nutrition. Carnations are colored pink, red or violet by anthocyanin or yellow and white by flavonol pigments. Most carnations cultured in Korea are red or pink and the amount of anthocyanin determines the darkness or subtleness of the colors. The optimum temperature for anthocyanin generation is 15∼25℃ and the generation is reduced out of the range of temperatures.

Origin and History
Carnations are Caryophyllaceae perennials of southern Europe and called ‘Dianthus’ about 300 B.C to be called by their scientific name ultil today. Carnations were widely introduced to many people when Dalmetia, a French breeding specialist developed a four-season type in 1840 Dalmais and after France, Britain and the US improved the kinds to provide various colors, sizes and shapes. In North America, they tried to develop greenhouse type, while France concentrated in wild type for flower beds or gardens. Therefore, carnations became world’s No. 1 cut-flower. In Korea, they are loved throughout the year as the queen of cut-flowers along with the chrysanthemums. Carnations currently cultured for profits were created by inter-breeding Dianthus caryophyllus of Greece, Dianthus chinensis of Asia and other kinds. At first, they were 1st Season type that bloomed in Jul∼Aug, but now they became a 4th Season tyle. In Korea, William Sim and White Sim kinds were introduced in late 1960’s for test culturing, but the actual cultivation started in 1970 when the plastic film greenhouses were widely introduced.

Lilies started by Hyeong-Sun Lee of Maejeong-ri and others with the support from Technology Center in 1998, are now concentrated in 3ha-wide plastic film greenhouses by Nabeom-ri Lily Complex. They are highly profitable not only in domestic markets, but also in international markets, including Japanese markets. Our village was appointed 「Exportation Flowering Pot Complex」 by the government (Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry) in 2002.

They are tissue-cultured for brighter colors, stronger stems and longer life-spans. They are most widely distributed in Flowering Pot Distribution Center of Garak-dong and other parts of Korea (Jeju and other) are willing to produce Haenam premium lilies.
