Tomatoes are said to have originated from the southern highlands of South America. Tomatoes are eggplant-family plant being perennial plants in tropical climate, but they grow once a year in moderate climate. Tomato culturing methods are Premature Cultivation, Forcing Culture and Retarding Culture, but Premature Cultivation is mostly used. They are raised on seedbed and transferred to fields or greenhouses. They grow many side branches from leaf axils, but when cultivated for green fruits, they are grown by using a cultivation method in which they cut all the side branches. The processing-type tomatoes for juicing and ketchup-making, they are cultivated by non-cutting and non-bearing cultivation in which they do not sort branches or erect supporters to reduce the production cost. However, these methods are difficult in Korea, because Korean fields cause many diseases due to high temperatures and humidity and deteriorate the fruits touching the soil.
