This area forms a basin encircled by the hills of two mountain ranges. One is the offshoot of the Noryeong Mountains which run southwesterly and the other is the Sobaek Mountain range which runs southeasterly.
Having a southern continental climate, this mountainous area is marked by having a wide range of temperature between the hottest and coldest periods of the year and has abundant rainfall and a long diurnal period. It also has an oceanic climate with high temperature and humidity in summer.
The yearly mean temperature is 11.8¨¬C. During January the average is -2.7¨¬C, and in August is 25.8¨¬C. About 1,300mm of precipitation falls every year. As the Keumsan area has an oceanic climate with high temperatures and humidity in summer and also forms a basin encircled by mountains, it has abundant rainfall.
The rocks, which are scattered about the topsoil in the Keumsan area, mainly consist of aqueous rocks and granite. Due to the erosion caused by the torrential downpour and the wide temperature range, most of the soil in Keumsan (meaning 'steep mountainous area') is residual soil.
The Ginseng fields in Keumsan-kun are the steepest fields in the nation of which the barren soils are acidic residual soils that are nearly white. For that reason, from ancient times special crops have always been cultivated here such as Ginseng and herbs instead of staple grains.
